How to know your carpet's pile direction
All carpets have a direction known as the pile direction. Knowing your carpet's pile direction can help when needing to remove a stain or even hoover your carpet.
How to work out your carpet’s pile direction
You can tell the direction of a pile by running your fingers across the carpet. When you run your fingers one way the carpet shouldn't look any different. However when you run your fingers in the opposite direction you should be able to see marks left on the carpet from your fingers, showing that is the opposite way to the direction the pile runs in.
Sometimes it's not so easy to tell the direction of the pile of a carpet, if you're not certain you can drop a coin on the carpet to check. The way in which the coin bounces, indicates the way that the pile is going.
Why it's important to know the pile direction of your carpet
When you're hoovering, you should always hoover against the pile of the carpet to get all of the dirt and dust out of the carpet. However, when you're cleaning your carpet, such as removing a stain, you should clean with the pile, to ensure the carpet isn't left looking in different pile directions when it dries.
When removing a stain from your carpet you should first lift the pile to get the product right into the stain, then brush the pile back in the correct direction to ensure you don't set the pile in an upward motion.
